We paid off our house! It is a huge milestone and it reduces our expenses by nearly $1,300.00 every month. Our bare bones budget is $1,400.00 a month.
Note: A great portion of this mortgage pay off came from our savings. In essence, it took us about 4-5 years to be mortgage free.

Do you know about the tradition of the pineapple?
In the Federal style houses with grand stairways, the bottom support of the banister is wide and hollow. The opening is covered with a wood button. When the mortgage is paid, you remove the button, place the mortgage papers in the space, and replace the button with a carved pineapple. Everyone who visits knows your house is paid for! (Plus you know where the mortgage papers are!)
I have no staircase, but my mom bought be a brass pineapple to hang inside me door.
